The SEND Department at Emmanuel College provides care and support for students with Additional Learning Needs. Mr Ogborn, Vice Principal, is responsible for ensuring that the learning needs of all students are catered for within the classroom, including those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). The department is headed by Mrs Scott, the Assistant Vice Principal: Student Support (SENDCO) who is responsible for overseeing the day to day provision of education for students with Special Educational Needs and disabilities. Mrs Scott leads a group of Learning Support Assistants (LSAs), including Mrs Cowey who is Student Support Lead. At Emmanuel College, we have students with a range of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities and will always seek to personalise intervention. This may be through in class support, 1:1 intervention, support at break/ lunchtime or helping them access the curriculum through the use of adapted resources. Where a student needs more intensive or tailored support, they may spend some time working in the Alternative Learning Provision room. The department also coordinates Access Arrangements for external examinations, alongside Mrs Baker who is examinations officer.
Teaching staff at Emmanuel College have front line responsibility for meeting the special educational needs of each of their students, and for providing appropriate pastoral care. Teachers are also responsible for identifying students with SEND and this practice is supported by regular staff training and development. When a student is identified as having a special educational need, the SENDCO will oversee the provision put in place for the student in consultation with the parents and student.
Students with a special educational need are highlighted on the SEND Register. Following changes to the SEND Code of Practice, there are now two categories of support – SEN Support and students who have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), formerly known as a Statement of Special Need. This central document allows all staff to identify students within their classes who may require additional support. Some students, depending on the complexity of their needs, will be issued with a Personal Profile, drawn up by the IL Department in consultation with the student and his or her parents/ guardians. In a similar way to an Individual Education Plan (IEP), the Personal Profile sets out the student’s specific learning needs alongside ways in which staff can provide support, and sets appropriate targets for the student to achieve throughout the course of the year.
Many students are known to the department and may have specific needs such as dyslexia or a hearing impairment, however, only students who require specific intervention are included on the SEND register. A separate list of students whom staff must be aware of and monitor is also held but these students do not have a difficulty which can only be overcome by extra work or special help outside that normally provided by us for our students.
Outside agencies with which the IL Department works closely include the Educational Psychological Service, Hearing and Visual Impairment Services, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Communication Difficulties and Autistic Teams, as well as Social Services in Gateshead, Newcastle and Durham the local area. The Pastoral and SEND Departments share information in order to support students both emotionally and academically.
