Athletes claim podium finish in North East regional final

Friday 9 June 2023

Elite athletes from Years 9 and 10 secured a top-three finish in the North East at Middlesbrough Sports Village this week, with many students claiming first and second place.

Our Year 9 and 10 boys’ athletics team had qualified for the regional final, having won their county round on 23 May.  They now faced teams from the top eight schools in the North East – coming from Northumberland, Yorkshire and Humberside.  It was an extremely competitive field, and the stakes were high: only the winners would progress to the National Finals.  Our first round score ranked us fifth, so we knew we had our work cut out.

The boys took to the field first and Callum Collins (Year 9) top scored for our team and won the discus with an impressive 27.16m.  After lunch it was on to the track, an area of great strength for the team.  Ben McClean (Year 10) ran a fantastic race to clock 4.37 in a very competitive 1500m, whilst Abdullah Djabali (Year 10) and KC Nwoye (Year 9) took first and second respectively in the 100m.  With Eddie Allan and Temitope Sowunmi (both Year 10) completing a double win in the 200m races, the team was growing in confidence.  Joe Ramshaw (Year 9) took second in the 800m and, after the relay, it was time to wait for the results.

Emmanuel finished in third place overall – a great achievement in such a high-quality field, and a very good improvement on their fifth place rank at the start of the day.  Congratulations to all the boys who took part!
