Young engineers in Year 8 had a unique opportunity to work with members of the IET (Institute of Engineering and Technology) on a team-based, real-life Engineering challenge.

The Faraday Challenge saw 36 students working together to design and prototype a product, using knowledge and understanding from their Technology studies as well as plenty of creativity. This year’s brief, which was only revealed to the students on the morning of the Challenge, was for a product to help improve road safety.

Our students came up with a fantastic range of ideas, from safety systems that would only allow horses to enter but not motorcycles (to reduce anti-social behaviour), to cars with solar panels that move to follow the direction of the sun. At the time of writing, the teams were still fighting it out to be crowed the winner! Results will be revealed soon…

Head of Technology Mrs Glover said: “As we know, Engineering is the application of knowledge and creativity to meet the needs of humanity. And today, our students did just that. It was amazing to see them working together to create such a range of brilliant ideas.”
