On Wednesday 3 May, we were the privileged hosts of David Smith, Economics Editor at The Sunday Times. This was a promised visit after our young economists inundated him with entries to his annual Christmas quiz and were declared the winners! (See background story here.)
So, despite the train delays, David travelled from London to Gateshead, and made good on his promise. For staff and students, it was fantastic to meet the man behind the voice, the author whose work we have so admired for many years.
Head of Economics, Mr Clarke, was privileged to show David around College, introduce him to staff and students, and share a little of what makes Emmanuel College such a special place.
During his talk, David touched on numerous topics, including the global financial crisis of 2008-09, Brexit and the Trump trade wars, the pandemic, and the Russian invasion of the Ukraine.
Before he left, David was kind enough to spend some time answering questions from our A level students who were keen to exploit those marginal gains in advance of the exam season.
And with that, David returned to London. A 500-mile round trip to give a talk! Absolutely brilliant, David! Thank you.
