Performances in football and girls’ cross country were team highlights for a Gateshead college as it hosted an inter-school day of sporting excellence, camaraderie and competition.
The Year 7 runners and Year 9 football squad from Emmanuel College emerged triumphant from the mud and freezing conditions in the annual Emmanuel Schools Foundation ‘Olympics’.
The college hosted teams from across the year groups from its sister schools – The King’s Academy, Middlesbrough, Trinity Academy, Doncaster, and Bede Academy, Blyth – who travelled to Gateshead for the event.
Competitions were also held in volleyball, netball and rugby, while the schools’ hockey teams got to play their matches at Gateshead International Stadium.
After the results were announced, Emmanuel students presented medals to all the competitors and handed over the mantle to Trinity Academy, which will host next year’s event.
Jonathan Winch, principal of Emmanuel College, told the students: “It’s been an absolute privilege to host you. We hope new friendships have been made and that you will take the values displayed today with you in your sport and your lives.”
Head of PE Simon Leonard added: “At one point today I saw Year 10 rugby players applauding a Year 7 girl from another school as she ran by in the cross country relay. That’s what the ESF ‘Olympics’ is all about.”
