This week, Catherine Harness received her certificate for achieved the highest grade of 1st Dan (Black Belt) in Aikido.  Catherine took part in an Aikido martial arts grading event here at Emmanuel College in July, when she was in Year 13, and she became the first student at the club to achieve Black Belt!

Catherine, who has been a regular member of the school’s Aikido club since 2017, was required to demonstrate knowledge and technique of the martial art in the presence of senior instructor Mr Riley (4th Dan Aikido), who was representing the International Martial Arts Federation (Europe).  Also present was Mr Parks, Student Welfare Officer, who is a 3rd Dan Aikido instructor with IMAF and runs the club here at Emmanuel College.

Mr Parks said: “Catherine thoroughly deserves this achievement.  Her Aikido technique is excellent and is matched by her dedication to our club and the support of other members.  It shows the high standards that can be achieved from those who attend and train regularly.  I would also like to thank the students who gave up their own time to partner Catherine during the grading.”

The club, established in 2015, is running again this academic year, and new members are always welcome.  Training times are 2:45pm to 3:45pm on Fridays.
