Inspiring students for a career in science

Tuesday 19 July 2022

A series of fascinating ‘Careers in Science’ sessions are opening the eyes of our Science students to the myriad of career pathways available to them.

Over the past few months, we’ve had the pleasure of inviting a range of guests into College – from medical experts, to experienced lecturers … and our very own alumni.

Dr Lisa Russell, a lecturer in Haemato-oncology at Newcastle University, captivated students with details of her career pathway and the work of her research group on the genetic basis and potential future treatments for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL).  Her work has been extensively published and has led to treatment changes in the US and is currently being used to inform clinical trials for ALL treatments in the UK.  It was a fascinating insight into the career of a cancer research scientist, as well as a useful teaching point on the molecular basis of cancer for our Biology students.

As the minds of our sixth-form students turned to university choices, we hosted Dr Mark Carlile, Principal lecturer and Pharmaceutical Science Lead at Sunderland University.  Students heard about different course options relating to pharmaceutical sciences offered by Sunderland University and the high employability rating of graduates in this field.

Alumni Holly Farrell and Louise Phillips returned to College to talk to sixth-form students about their next steps after leaving Emmanuel.  Both are studying Biomedical Sciences at Northumbria University and are aspiring to work as NHS scientists when they graduate.  They shared their experiences of their degree course and tips for student life, which gave students valuable insights.

Emmanuel alumna Abby Graham, who is currently studying Pharmacy at Newcastle University, gave sixth-form students a very helpful insight into a career in pharmacy, advice on personal statements for university applications and an overview of the course and related courses at Newcastle University.  This inspired many students to look into this option further.

We’re very thankful to all our guests for taking the time to come and share their experiences and insights with the students.  What better way to understand a topic than to hear directly from those with experience!
