Longstanding records tumble at Swimming Gala

Thursday 26 October 2023

It was a record-breaking morning at Dunston Leisure Centre on 19 October as Emmanuel College students from all year groups gathered for our annual Swimming Gala.

The atmosphere was one of encouragement, excitement and positivity as parents and carers lined the poolside to cheer on the competitors.  It was wonderful to see the talent that our students have in the pool and the courage of those students who participated despite a lack of experience.

After a post-pandemic hiatus in new records, this proved to be a momentous year, as top swimmers smashed a number of longstanding records, including some that have stood for over 20 years.  Year 12’s Anna Finlay broke the College records in Senior Girls 100m Freestyle and 50m Breaststroke, records that have stood since 2001 and 2002 respectively.  She also formed part of the record-breaking team from Pandon House, which also including Chloe Pritchard (Year 12) and Chloe Stephenson (Year 11), which together beat the Senior Girls Relay record.  Year 12’s Evie Hutchinson also set a new record in the Senior Girls 50m Freestyle.

Pandon House emerged as the winner, with Derwent in second place, followed by Team in third and Don in fourth place.

Well done to everyone involved and a huge thank you to the sixth-form students who came to help.
